In 1943, a group met to start an independent, missions-minded church in the Willow Run area of Ypsilanti. The congregation called their church the Baptist Tabernacle, and then called Rev. R. C. Nichols as the first pastor. The first constitution was adopted, and the church was incorporated in the state of Michigan.
Under the leadership of Rev. Harold Engel, the second pastor, God blessed Forest Avenue Baptist Church with its highest attendances and a number of developments took place. In 1947, the original wood frame building was moved from the Willow Run area to the property at 218 E. Forest Avenue. The church was renamed the Forest Avenue Baptist Church. The main auditorium was completed in 1952, and the wood frame building was moved to the rear and is now used as an activity area. The main education wing was completed in 1961, with the balcony and other modifications. The drive-up handicap accessible entrance, foyer and elevator were added in 1993 as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration. Roof improvements, replacements, new baptistery and windows have been done since. The facilities are structurally sound and well maintained.
Forest Avenue Baptist Church is planning to relocate to property south of Ypsilanti. We are offering the Forest Avenue Baptist Church for sale. We trust God for the resources to build a building suitable for our current congregational needs and for the future expansion at the new location. Pray with us for God's Will and His Glory!
