Thirty eight people assembled for worship in a dry cleaning store on September 21, 1913. That was the very first meeting of what was to become Jefferson Avenue United Methodist Church. Over the years, many notable clergy have served this church. During their membership, Richard Cheatham and Juanita Ferguson dedicated their lives to ministry. Pastors who are warmly remembered include: Rudolph Boyce, Thomas Honderich, Phil Seymour, Merton Seymour, and Steven Meeks.
Jefferson Avenue has neither moved nor merged over its history, but it had the opportunity to reach out to the members of St. Mark and East Grand Boulevard UMC congregations as their churches closed. The key to the ministry enlarging the facility three times by always challenging themselves to reach out to new people in an ever changing community.
The church hopes that the new owner will continue to serve the community. |
