The Missouri-Synod Lutheran church located at 8590 Esper Boulevard, Detroit, has always been unique.
From about the turn of the century (1900) to the late 1970's, Mount Olive Lutheran Church was a thriving neighborhood congregation. One of the major things which made Mont Olive so unique was the fact that the congregation chose to become a member of the English District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. This meant that instead of speaking and having worship in German, English was the primary language. This coupled with act of walking to church helped it grow as a neighborhood church.
The concept of a the neighborhood began to change rapidly during the 70's and 80's. Mount Olive Lutheran church tried many approaches to evangelize the new neighbors, bout to no avail. As the younger members began to move away from the neighborhood in increasing numbers, the few remaining members found it impossible to carry on a viable ministry.
Around 1982, the congregation known as Mount Olive Lutheran Church voted to close its ministry in the hopes that a new Lutheran Ministry would take root and grow. A few of the older members continued to meet using a visiting Pastor until December 1984.
In December of 1984 New Mount Olive Evangelical Lutheran Church was brought to life. The New Mount Olive would cater to the African-American community. The new church became heavily involved with the Detroit Public Schools and participated in the Community Councils. A Christian Daycare Center operated for over 14 years at the facility.
Now we are faced with the prospect of another Christian Church carrying on the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
