Methodist circuit riders held home meetings in the Bell Branch are of Redford Township from 1832-1838. A meeting house was erected in 1840, located at Telegraph and Five Mile Road. Another group began services at Duboisville on Seven Mile Road near Berg Road, with a brick church being erected in 1892. These two congregations merged in 1912 and built the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Redford on Grand River Avenue.
Finally, an additional property was acquired on Grand River and the first unit of the present church building was built in 1919. The present sanctuary dates from 1953 with the educational wing being added in 1958. In 1978, St Matthew's United Methodist, which had been founded in 1944 merged with Redford United Methodist Church. The current congregation will be merging with Aldersgate United Methodist Church and would like the new owner to continue their contribution to the community.
