Church of the Brethren: Site History

The Battle Creek Church of the Brethren began with the visit of Brother Demerest Early from North Manchester, Indiana in April 1916 in search of employment. He and a brother-in-law found employment and moved to Battle Creek with their families. There were others working and taking nurse training at the Sanitarium. They began a Sunday School and had Prayer Meetings. The first baptism took place in 1919 with Mrs. Floyd Kilpatrick. The attendance rapidly grew to sixty including those who moved from Woodgrove Church of the Brethren. The home they were meeting in was soon overcrowded.

In 1920 they decided to build a church and it was dedicated in the same year . Sister Goldie Early was employed by the District Ministry Board as "Mission Visitor". The first full time pastor came in 1921 (Brother Russell Weller). In 1926, John Miller became pastor and a building was started at LaMont and West Van Buren. The construction project stalled and in 1943 it was determined that the construction site was to be abandoned.

The congregation with the help of the Michigan District Board and General Brotherhood board decided to locate the new building in a different neighborhood. After extensive planning, getting pledges, grants and gifts the process began to take shape. A contractor was found that would work the church's volunteer labor and the ground was broken at 88 Saratoga Avenue on June 6, 1954. The Cornerstone Laying Service was held on November 28, 1954. The first service was held on November 28, 1954.

The building served the congregation well over the years and produced a number of future pastors. Over time the congregation was reduced in size to the point where it could not support all the ministries. The Church of the Brethren would like another entity to fully utilize the building to the glory of God.
