Good Shepherd Lutheran Church: Site History

The beginnings of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church reach back to before World War II (1939). With the groundbreaking in the fall of 1939, the new church (sanctuary at the north end of the property) was dedicated on April 14, 1940, at a cost of $15,600. The parsonage on Edmore was built in 1952 and has been owned by the church since construction.

The church continued to grow and the adjacent lawn to the south was eyed for expansion. The growth of the church was fueled by the building of the homes in the neighborhood, both Detroit and south Warren. The ground breaking ceremony for the new church (current sanctuary) was on November 28, 1954 with the cornerstone set on March 20, 1955. The expansion nearly quadrupled the size of the complete facility.

The size of the congregation peaked in 1961 with 599 communicants and 758 baptized members. The William's Memorial Organ was dedicated in 1966. The Good Shepherd Congregation has kept the church in excellent condition over the years. Major expenses, such as boiler replacement, have taken place in the last few years.

The Good Shepherd Congregation has reached a point where the existing membership felt it best to transfer the property into the hands of a vibrant congregation that could build on their past successes in praising God. They have been duly blessed and would hope that God's grace may be conferred onto the next owner.
